Bahn Huakhon Thawatchai Shop: Bahn is Thai for a house. Huakhon is the name of a mask used in the iconic Thai theatrical performance known as Khon.

Description:
The Bahn Huakhon Thawatchai Shop founded by Mr. Thawatchai Mahattanasin.

He attended the Huakhon making class at the Department of Ten Crafts, which is a school under Thailand’s Fine Arts Department in the Nakhon Pathom District. Later, he attended the Huakhon making class at the Royal Craftsmen College for a year and received his professional certificate.

The making of Huakhon masks begins with a model in clay and then cast in plaster, then placing 15 layers of mulberry paper mache over the plaster model. After letting it dry and harden it is cut in half so that it can be removed from the form and then reunited. The surface is further refined by applying a layer of glue mixed with sawdust. This is then sanded smooth before a final mulberry paper layer and a white base coat. It is then polished again before painting the final face details, sealing it with shellac and gold leaf. Currently, Mr. Thawatchai Mahattanasin continues making Huakhon masks and he welcomes those who are interested to visit.
